Kiwifruit Seasonal work - Bud Thinning in the Bay of Plenty

If you're a backpacker exploring New Zealand, the Bay of Plenty is a region that combines scenic beauty with fantastic seasonal work opportunities. One such opportunity is kiwifruit bud thinning, a critical step in preparing orchards for a successful harvest.

What is Kiwifruit Bud Thinning?

Kiwifruit bud thinning is the process of removing excess buds from kiwifruit vines to ensure that the remaining flowers produce high-quality fruit. Thinning helps balance the fruit load, improves size and flavor, and supports healthy vine growth. This work typically occurs from late winter to early spring, as the vines begin to prepare for flowering. The task is essential for the kiwifruit industry, making it a valuable seasonal job for backpackers.

Why Combine Kiwifruit Bud Thinning with a Stay at Wanderlust NZ?

  2. Community: Staying at Wanderlust NZ means you’ll likely meet other travelers who are also working in the orchards. Sharing experiences, tips, and even rides to the orchards can help make the work more enjoyable.

  3. Balance of Work and Play: While bud thinning might be physically demanding, staying in Tauranga gives you access to plenty of leisure activities. Hike up Mount Maunganui, relax on the beach, or explore the nearby hot pools or even head over the hill to Hobbiton..
