Autumn Adventures in Tauranga
π Autumn Adventures in Tauranga: Discover the Magic of McLaren Falls
As summer fades and the air begins to cool, Tauranga transforms into a tapestry of warm golds, deep reds, and fiery oranges. Autumn in the Bay of Plenty is a hidden gem—and one of the most stunning spots to witness this seasonal shift is McLaren Falls Park, just a short drive from the heart of Tauranga.
Whether you're travelling solo, road-tripping with friends, or enjoying a relaxing stop on your backpacking adventure, autumn is a perfect time to slow down and soak in the beauty of nature. And if you’re staying with us at Wanderlust Nz, you’re already in the ideal location to explore it all!
π Why Visit McLaren Falls in Autumn?
1. A Colourful Wonderland
McLaren Falls Park is one of the best places in the North Island to see autumn colours. The park is filled with deciduous trees—especially around the lake—putting on a spectacular show as the leaves change. It’s a photographer’s paradise and a peaceful retreat for nature lovers.
2. Peaceful Walks & Hidden Trails
Enjoy leisurely walks along the lake’s edge or venture into native bush on one of the many trails. The Waterfall Track is a must-do, especially in the early evening when glowworms begin to appear along the path.
3. Wildlife & Waterfalls
Keep an eye out for ducks, swans, and friendly sheep that roam the open fields. And don’t forget the falls themselves—McLaren Falls is especially impressive after rain, tumbling over rocks into a deep gorge below.
4. Glowworms, Sunsets & Stargazing
Autumn evenings are cool and crisp, perfect for sunset picnics BBQ's by the lakeside. If you wander into some of the banks you will have a chance to see the glow worms! With little light pollution, McLaren Falls is also a fantastic spot for stargazing on a clear night.
π Getting There from Tauranga
McLaren Falls Park is just 20–25 minutes’ drive from the centre of Tauranga. If you don't have a car, we can help you arrange transport or carpool with fellow travellers at the hostel.
